May is the start of rainy season in Florida. In our tropical climate, heavy rainstorms and flooding is common during this time of year. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and protect your car and home.

  • Avoid driving too fast, you can easily hydroplane. Make sure your tires are properly inflated and your tires are not worn out. 1
  • Be careful with  flooded-out streets and parking lots, remember cars aren't boats, avoid deep water. 2
  • If you are caught in a heavy storm, look for cover. This could include a covered car park, a gas station or under a bridge. However, take extreme care when pulling over, put on your hazard lights, and don’t risk your safety or the safety of others by dashing madly for cover. 3
  • Don’t park under trees as there is a danger of falling branches and debris. Stay in your car and only leave the safety of your sheltered spot when the storm has passed. 4
  • Make sure that any dead and rotting branches are removed from trees to avoid the risk of falling debris during a severe storm. Also ensure that debris is removed from roofs and gutters. 5
  • The power surge of a lightning strike can easily overload most appliances and devices. It’s best to unplug these before the storm arrives. 6
  • General and regular home maintenance, like clearing debris from gutters, is essential and will most definitely limit damages and discomfort in times of disaster. 7
  • Avoid walking through standing water as it may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines. 8

One should be very careful while driving a vehicle during the rainy season. Visibility is affected during the rainy season which could lead to an accident. Wipers play an important role by keeping the windshield clean. However, the ability of the wipers reduces over time. So, the condition of the wipers should be inspected at a regular interval and if necessary should replace with suitable substitutes for better visibility.
